IVCA Leisure League Round 1 – East Kildare Tour

IVCA Leisure League Round 1 – East Kildare Tour – 13/01/19

Sunday Jan 13th was a damp and windy morning as 12 riders signed on at Wheelworx car park for the 1st round of the 2019 leisure league. The only benefit weather-wise was the mild temperatures of about 9/10 degrees. Following all the friendly greetings and “Happy New Years”, a short briefing was held to outline the route, reminder of safety rules, warning about roadworks, etc. It was also noted that I first met a lot of the people in this group exactly 10 years ago, as my first spin with the IVCA was the Jan Tour 2009. It was also my first meeting with the late Gay Farnan RIP of whom we all have fond memories.

We headed out into a stiff westerly wind and soon got a nice steady pace going which everyone was comfortable with. A few rotations took place within the group to allow much needed shelter from the wind, as we made our way through Newcastle, Lyons Estate, Ardclough and Straffan. Following Bodenstown Cross Roads, the group made steady progress up and over the short climb before descending into Sallins. A very short section on the main road was followed by a left turn onto the much quieter Millicent Road and up to the turn for Clane, where a much welcomed refreshment stop was enjoyed by all.

Following the break, we headed up the main road towards Kilcock, past Clongowes Wood College before turning onto the minor road and through Rathcoffey. From there we made our way through Maynooth, Celbridge, Hazelhatch and past Peamount Hospital. To avoid roadworks on Nangor Rd, a slight change of direction was made to the normal route, bringing us through Adamstown. A short section of 2-3km of Bus Lane brought us all back to Wheelworx safe and sound. Thankfully no punctures or mechanicals were had. The total distance was 73km.

Many thanks to Philip Brogan who was feeling unwell, but kindly drove behind the group as backup. Thanks also to Tony Pearson for the photos.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the first tour of the year, and are looking forward to the Feb tour which takes place on 10th Feb at 10.00am departing from Airside Retail Park, Swords (further details to follow).

2018 Annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner

The annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner of the IVCA will take place at:

The Springfield Hotel, Leixlip, on Sunday 4th November, commencing at 2.30pm

This is a great end-of-season social event and provides an opportunity to catch up with fellow members to discuss the year just gone.

And, yes, there will be prizes to award, too, to the many winners across racing, touring and track events in 2018.

We hope to see as many people as possible in attendance – all members and partners are welcome.  The cost of the 3-course meal is €25, payable at the door.

The event is being subsidised by the IVCA and we are trying to gauge interest, so if you’re interested in coming could you please fill out the (very simple) form below:

Fergus Cracks it

There was a good turn out for the IVCA Hill Climb on Sunday, 23 September, which saw riders tackle a new event hill outside Rathcoole.  In spite of a maximum gradient of 17% one third of the way up, the new course was well received by all of the riders.

Fastest on the day was Fergus Craddock (pictured) who completed the 2.2 km course in 5 mins 57 secs.  Second place went to Fearghal Regan, with a time of 6 mins 6 secs, while just one second back in third place was David Vavasour on 6 mins 7 secs.

Best on Handicap time was Brian Kane, with Phil Ormrod second and Brendan Byrne third.  It was great to see many of our newer members turning out for the event for the first time and establishing a handicap time for next year.  The full results are below – they show how tight it was for some of the placings.

Many thanks to all of the marshals, time-keepers and our pusher-off-er.

IVCA Hill Climb Sun 23rd September – Rathcoole

Hi all ,

The Final IVCA  event for 2018, Hill Climb takes place this Sunday 23rd September.  Due to the volume of traffic using the Long Hill in Kilmacanogue, we have changed the venue for the event this year.  The new climb will be Cromwellstown Hill, outside Rathcoole.  Sign-on and refreshments afterwards will be at the nearby Beech Park Golf Club.  You can find the locations by clicking HERE .

A great day for IVCA Time Triallists.

Six of us entered the event but unfortunately only five made it down there, a middle of the night plumbing malfunction, our heating system, not me personally, ended my plans.

Hearty congratulations due to all.

Ian Cassidy, Bronze medal, M40.

Joe Sheehy, Bronze Medal, M50

Ken O’Neil and Ian O’Hara 16th and 21st respectively in M40.
