Stephen Fennell R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the sudden death of our friend and colleague, Stephen Fennell.  Stephen was a long-time member of Dublin Wheelers and of the IVCA.  He was our Race Director in 2015 and always dealt with the demands of the job in a calm and measured way.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.  Along with them, we will miss Stephen badly.

Funeral Arrangements are as follows:

Reposing at Rock’s Funeral Home, Swords, on Thursday evening (23rd Feb) from 4 o’c. to 6 o’c.  Removal on Friday morning to St. Finian’s Church, River Valley, arriving for 10 o’c. Mass, followed by funeral to St. Fintan’s Cemetery, Sutton.  Further details available here.

IVCA Awards event next Saturday

A reminder that the annual IVCA Awards and Prize presentation takes place this coming Saturday, 3rd December in The Grasshopper Inn, Clonee, commencing at 2.30 pm.

The Awards will be preceded by a short EGM to consider and vote on a new Constitution for the Association.  The new Constitution preserves the original objectives of the IVCA, but addresses some procedural matters to reflect the way the organisation operates in practice.  Papers for the EGM were posted to all members a few weeks ago.

A list of prize winners for 2016 will be circulated by e-mail to members, but all are welcome to the Awards event.  Light refreshments will be served.

Sanyo Cup 2-up TT. 2016.

A lovely clear and calm morning when I left home at 0715 turned to a more normal wet and windy TT day by start time 🙁
Mick and Ciara got round the course in 49:23 just 58 seconds off estimated time to take the trophy with Mark and Ned in second 1:08 off estimated time and Eunan and Tom in third 1:14 off.
Nine pairings only today we suspect the All Ireland final might have had something to do with it. Fastest time 42:47 for Tony and Jonathan. Phil awards himself the booby prize for predicting last years finish time instead of actual. 12 seconds off estimate would have lifted the trophy. Sorry Billy, mea culpa. ;-(((  Even rebuilt my Marcello up for the team photo. Most of it is for sale if anyone interested.

Phil.

Leisure League update

Two events have taken place in the the Dick O’Brien Leisure League since our last Leisure report in July.

In August, the iconic 100 in 8 took place in difficult and windy conditions.  See Tony Pearson’s report on this tour  below.

[gview file=”https://theivca.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/100-in-8-report-2016.pdf”]

A clash with several other events on the Irish cycling calendar led to a very poor turn-out on the West Wicklow tour on 11th September.  Nonetheless, the bright, if breezy conditions led to spectacular views of Wicklow in all its glory in an experimental new route taking in Blessington Lakes and Slieve Coragh before heading into Dunlavin and back via Punchestown, Eadestown and Kilteel.  There were mixed views about the challenges of this new route, which might prompt a re-think for next year.  Many thanks to all who continue to support or help organise the Leisure tours. These tours were the foundations on which the IVCA was built many years ago.

SAT -10, Kilcock, 20/08/2016.

What a day to close the leagues season. Pouring rain and blowing a gale !!
Just six hardy souls, or idiots, answered Harry’s call to the start line. Ian ( Cassidy )did a storming 21:22 to win fastest and age standard. Needless to say no one got near there handicap, Pat being closest at 101.71%.
I’ll make a separate report of the final league tables when I’ve recovered, which according to my Garmin will be on Tuesday !!
Thanks to Harry for his final timekeeping stint of the season, and bon voyage for his trip down under. He’ll be heading for spring as opposed to what seems like nearly winter already here.
Many thanks also to the three volunteer marshals who got just as wet as the riders and probably a lot colder. One of them get’s his picture posted 🙂
Phil.
