Finishing on a high!

The final racing event of the season – the IVCA Hill Climb – takes place next Sunday, 1st October at Kilmacanogue, just past Bray in Co. Wicklow.

It’s the shortest road race of the year, at just under 3 Km, but one of the toughest.  Prizes will be awarded to the three fastest riders and to the first three on handicap time.  Handicaps are re-set every 2 years, so this ensures that riders in all ability groups have a chance to make the podium in this category.

The Hill Climb is a unique event which has been won by as little as a single second in the past.  Who will lift the trophy this year?

Sign-on (including for marshals) is from 10.20 am, with the first rider off at 11.00 (ish).

Car parking is available at Pluck’s Restaurant in Kilmacanogue, at the bottom of the Sugar Loaf.  Please note the car park will not be open until 10.15 am, so please do not arrive before that time as there is nowhere to park on the roadside.

Refreshments will be served afterwards in Pluck’s as we close the page on the 2017 racing season.

Sanyo Cup. Two up T.T. 24/10/2017.

A fine calm morning, Just a bit of drizzle out Trim way for the turn.
Seven pairs lined up for the start and all finished intact. Just one mixed pair among them.
William Parnell and Ned Costello take the trophy riding to just 13 seconds of estimated time, the only ones within a minute of estimate.

Next Sunday, 1st September draws the season to a close with the Kilmacanogue Hill Climb. We hope to see a good turnout.

Options day, 25 / 50 TT last chances for BAR / FAR.

Just 12 riders turned out for a final attempt to improve FAR / BAR times and were greeted by a fine and relatively calm morning.
Only eight of the scheduled twelve marshals turned up for duty leaving us very short with four roundabouts to be marshalled. Thanks to those who showed up. The defaulters will be sanctioned by racecomm.
Six of the twelve riders managed to post seasons bests showing the importance of the options day opportunity. Also having moved it to an earlier date was shown to have been a good move by ttcomm.
Now to the task of checking and sorting before producing the final results.

Bracken takes the title

One week after wining the Sonny Cullen Memorial, Sean Bracken delivered two-in-a-row at the IVCA Road Race Championship on 27th August.

On a windy and overcast day, this Age-Standard race came down to a sprint between a small group of 8 riders.  The tireless Sean Lally put in a tremendous ride in the windy conditions, out on his own for 75Km, and only caught in the last 4Km.  Behind him, a group of the strongest riders from other age categories had formed and worked hard together, never missing a beat, to chase down the leader.

At the line, it was Bracken who took the sprint for gold, followed by Terry Ferris in the silver medal position and Hugh David taking bronze.

Sat TT_10. 10 mile TT, Johnstownbridge.

A tough day at the office for the nine riders with the remnants of Storm Gert battering us on the outward leg. Probably most having one of their slowest ever outward legs followed by a correspondingly fast return. As always though the aggregate is a disappointing time. It would have been no surprise if no one had beaten handicap but Tony O’Malley managed to beat the odds.

Pat Byrne is the winner on Age Standard from Joe Sheehy and Ken O’Neill with each  gap just two seconds.

Ken was Fastest ahead of Joe and Tony.

I’ll highlight the final league tables in a later posting after checking. Anyone with queries shout quick and loud please. Hopefully there will be no changes from what you will see on the relevant result pages .
Thanks to Harry for the timing. No marshals to thank this week but all got around safely. Thanks also to our paramedic for the watchful eye.
BAR / FAR Options day next week 27th to round of the season apart from the Two up and the hillclimb after a few weeks rest.

Note VENUE CHANGE This SUNDAY 20th August

Due to a clash of events in Summerhill next Sunday the race committee has no alternative but to move the age championships planned for next Sunday to another venue.
The race will now take place on the Kilcullen (Long) circuit.
Venue – Kilcullen Community Centre
Sign on – Open 8.00am to 8.45am  Race Starts 9.00am
3 Laps of 26.4 km circuit.  Total 79.2 km
Marshals please arrive early. Marshal briefing 8.30am sharp

Road Race Championships details

Next Sunday (20th August) sees the highlight of the IVCA racing calendar, the Road Race Championship, taking place.  This event is run as an Age CP, i.e. a single race handicapped on age.  The time gaps between the age categories are provided below.

Due to traffic diversions in Co. Meath as a result of the Dublin Ironman event, the IVCA race will now take place over 3 laps of the Kilcullen circuit, with sign-on at Kilcullen Community Centre from 8.00 am to 8.45 am.  First riders will be off at 9 am.

Riders will start in 5-year age groupings, based on their year of birth – i.e. the age they will reach by 31st December 2017.  If you are riding the event, the attached list shows the group you will start with, based on your year of birth.

A Women’s Championship and trophy will be incorporated into the race provided a minimum of 5 women riders start the event.  Each woman competitor will ride in the age category above her actual age (e.g. a woman aged 40 will start with the 45-49 age group, a woman aged 49 will start in the 50-54 age group, etc).  With an increase this year in the number of women racing with the IVCA, this is a great opportunity for an IVCA Women’s champion to be crowned for the first time ever.

(1)       80 years and upwards at Go.   =                0 mins.

(2)       75 – 79  @  10 minutes               =          + 10 mins.

(3)       70 – 74  @  16 minutes               =          +   6 mins.

(5)       60 – 64  @  28 minutes               =          +   6 mins.

(6)       55 – 59  @  33 minutes               =          +   5 mins.

Sonny Cullen Memorial

Next Sunday’s race (13th August) is the Sonny Cullen Memorial.  Sonny was one of the top riders of the 1950s and ’60s.  He was an Irish international and represented Ireland at Olympics in Rome in 1960. On the domestic scene he was a multiple winner of the prestigious Jack Woodcock Memorial and a regular victor in the IVCA.

Sunday’s race takes place on the Green Sheds circuit, with sign-on at Dunsaney GAA club.

There will be four separate races, with the Sonny Cullen trophy being contested by Race 1 (Scratch & Semi-Scratch.

TTL_10. Culmullin Circuit TT.

A fine evening, possibly the best conditions of the season. Just fifteen riders and again a full compliment of marshals and timekeepers plus the Medic , whom I seem to have been overlooking ( apologies for that ) to look after the riders.. Thankfully the recently chipped road surface was not too loose but it was certainly rough.
Fergal May was fastest and also took the Age Standard points closely followed by Ken O’Neil and Joe Sheehy in second and third, again in actual time and age standard categories.
Colm Cassidy won on handicap followed Oliver Bright and Peter Raftery..
So that’s the last of the TTL League
and just Johnstown Bridge on the 19th to complete the Saturday League series.
After Sundays miserable weather I suspect we may have a good turnout on options day on the 27th to bring the BAR and FAR competitions to a close.
The League positions are available to see on the results sheets but I’ll post a separate summary on those and the after the options day results are processed.
