Death of Kevin Simms

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of our friend and colleague, Kevin Simms, who passed away yesterday, 20th April, in his 87th year.  Kevin was an IVCA stalwart and continued to turn out to our races well into his 80s.  That, however, was only one part of a distinguished cycling career which stretched back to his participation in the first Ras Tailteann in 1953.
In 2012, Kevin rode the time trial in the World Master’s Championship in Austria and finished in 12th place in his age group, for which he proudly collected a trophy.
Kevin was also a fabulous artist and occasionally brought his latest piece of work to share with his friends in the IVCA.
Above all, Kevin was a quiet, modest man, but with a great sense of humour.  Our thoughts are with his family at this time.  He will be sorely missed.
Kevin’s funeral arrangements can be found by clicking here.

50 in 4 next Sunday, 11th March

A reminder that the 50 in 4 (50 miles in 4 hours) tour takes place next Sunday, 11th March, setting out  from The Grasshopper Inn, Clonee at 9:00 am.  The route will head towards Summerhill and on to Knightsbrook, returning to Summerhill for a tea stop; then it’s on to Maynooth and finishing back in Clonee.  (Click on the image below for a larger view of the route).

Following a series of weekends of bad weather, this spin provides a great opportunity to get the legs and lungs working again.  The 50 in 4 is also the first leg of the IVCA “triple” which see the award of a silver Touring Medal to any rider completing the 50 in 4, Wicklow 200 and 100 in 8 in the same year.  We hope to see as many members as possible on the start line in Clonee.

Important information for Racing members

The Race Committee has been busily working away over the last number of weeks to put together a full programme of racing events for 2018.  The first race of the season takes place on Sunday, 25th March.

As has been the case for the last number of years, we will be holding an Information Day for all racing members where race numbers, membership cards, the Race Calendar and marshalling rosters will be distributed.  Instructions will also be issued around race safety.

The Information Day will take place on Saturday 24th March, in the Springfield Hotel, Leixlip, Co. Kildare, at 2.30 pm.

All racing members must attend this event.  Race numbers can only be collected on 24th March.  They will not under any circumstances be distributed on the morning of the first race.

Please note that due to a succession of other events in the preceding weeks (i.e. Mother’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day), it is only possible to hold one Information event this year.  All racing members should therefore make arrangements to attend on 24th March.

50 in 4 postponed until 11th March

The 50 in 4 tour which was scheduled for Sunday, 4th March, has been postponed until 11th March due to the weather conditions.

The event will start at The Grasshopper Inn, Clonee at 9:00 am.  The route will take the direction of Summerhill and on to Knightsbrook, returning to Summerhill for a tea stop then onto Maynooth and finish in Clonee.  Click on the image below for a larger view of the route.

North Dublin Tour, Sunday 11th February

Round 2 of the Dick O’Brien Leisure League takes place on Sunday 11th February, starting from Eurocycles, Airside Shopping Centre, Swords at 10.00 am sharp.

The tour will head for Ratoath, through Curragha to the Ashbourne Road.  A right turn at Kentstown Cross brings the cyclists straight through Duleek to join the Old Belfast Road at Julianstown.

There will be a short tea stop at Apple Green on the lefthand side of the road before heading home through Stamullen and Balscadden.  The outward journey is mostly flat and there is a relatively easy climb over  Balscadden on the way home.  The distance is 85km.

It would be great to see a good turn-out again for this event following the very successful first touring event in January.

To get to Eurocycles go straight down Airside and take right turn at Airside Ford, then first left and left again (for location, click here).
