Byrd flies fastest up the hill

Eamonn Byrd proved to be the fastest rider in a closely contested battle for the IVCA Hill Climb on Cromwellstown Hill on 2nd October, with just three seconds separating the top three riders.

Starting mid-way down the field in this time trial event, Eamonn was the first rider to break 6 minutes for the 2.25 Km ascent, with a time of 5 mins 46 seconds.  He barely had time to catch his breath before the next rider on the road, Colin Robinson, crossed the line in 5 mins 49.04 seconds.

There was then a nail-biting wait for the remaining riders to finish, with the penultimate rider, Paul Dolan, pushing hard all the way to the line to stop the clock in 5 mins 49.41 seconds – less than half a second behind Robinson.  Ross Cadogan was the fourth rider to break 6 minutes on the day, with a time of 5 mins 57 secs.

Ian Devlin was the best against Handicap Time, improving on his previous time by 7 seconds.  Second place on handicap went to Daragh O’Toole, with a 5 second improvement on his time.  Eamonn Byrd featured again on Handicap Time, with his time of 5:46 exactly matching his previous best from 2019.  Next in this category were Colin Robinson, Paul Dolan and Ross Cadogan.

See the full results of the 2022 Hill Climb below.

A special word of thanks to timekeepers Harry Sherratt and Dave Cormack, and helpers Terry Ferris and Phil Ormrod at the start and finish respectively.

Finish on a high – Hill Climb takes place this Sunday 2nd October

Hi all,

The Road Race Leagues are over, but there is one last chance for racing members to flex their muscles in the IVCA Hill Climb which takes place next Sunday, 2nd October, on Cromwellstown Hill, outside Rathcoole. The course is 2.25 Km long with an average gradient of 5.5% (maximum of 17%).

Parking and sign-on will be at the nearby Beech Park Golf Club, Rathcoole.  You can find the location by clicking here.  Sign-on is from 10.15 am, with the first rider off at 11 am.  Refreshments and prize-giving afterwards in the Golf Club.

Prizes will be awarded to the three fastest riders and to the three best improvers on handicap (i.e. their previous best time on the hill).  Anyone who has not ridden the Hill Climb previously on Cromwellstown Hill will ride off a handicap time of 5:38, the hill record set by Paul Dolan in 2019.

Change of date and venue for Sanyo Cup

Hi all

The Sanyo Cup 2-up Time Trial will now take place on Saturday, 17th September to avoid a clash of dates with the penultimate road race of the season on 18th September.  The time trial will take place on the Summerhill-Kilcock road, with the sign-on and start/finish at Hatton’s hotel link below, roughly halfway between Kilcock and Summerhill.  The course runs between the roundabouts at Kilcock and Summerhill and is approximately 17.6 km long.  Sign-on will be open from 9 am, with the first riders off at 9.30 am.

The Sanyo Cup has been a constant feature on the IVCA racing calendar, with some of the biggest names in Irish cycling history etched on the trophy.  The time trial operates on an “estimated time” basis, with each team forecasting their time in advance.  The cup is awarded to the team which completes the course closest to their estimated time.  Prizes will also be awarded to the fastest team.

This year, IVCA members can invite a guest rider over 18 years of age to compete on their team.  If the guest rider is not already covered by Cycling Ireland insurance, they can take out Single Event insurance (One Day Licence) for a cost of €10.  This insurance can be purchased at sign-on.

We hope to see a good turn-out for the event.  Normal road bikes are welcome.
